Students will: 9.1.4 examine the structure of Canada’s federal political system by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions and issues: • How are laws passed in the federal political system? Chapter 1 - Essay Test QuestionEssay Question: Write a persuasive arguement about whether lobbyists are a good or bad part of our government. How do they influence the government, and what are the benefits and drawbacks of including them in our political debate?
There will be 4 sources you will use to back up and support your position. |
Chapter 1 RubricsCritical Challenge #1In groups you will present a Bill that you feel is a benefit to Canadians and that should be adopted as a Law to be interpreted in the Judicial Branch of the Federal Government. You are to hand in a written response to why you feel your bill is important. As well you are to include two paragraphs outlining your two best arguements for the bill and two paragraphs outlinging the best two arguements against your bill. You should use as many examples to support your position and include sources.
Upon the research your group will present the bill to the House of Commons where at the completion, there will be a 5 minute question period and a vote to whether the bill will be passed to the Senate. Who is Really in Charge of Canada?

Chapter 2 Essay Test QuestionWhen a young offender has committed a crime do you think their identity should be revealed to the public? Is it mor important to protect the young offender or be concerned about public safety? Make sure to express your opinion and to provide reasons for your answer. You should add examples where applicable.

Critical Challenge #2
Students will be placed into groups to review real life court cases that involve our youth. Each group will review two cases that will be assigned to them and will discuss the cases as a defence team. They will talk about the case dynamics, and classify the severity of the case on a scale of 1-10. After they have done this they will present the cases to the class justifying their reasoning under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Critical Challenge #3
Students will individually complete a historical video using their choice of movie making software to produce a short 1-2 mintute video outlining the historical significance of a group in Canadian history that has had their rights infringed upon under the current charter. Students can use Nero, Movie Maker, or Mac Movie. Examples can include the internment camps of the Japanese, Ukrainians, Italians, suffrage movement of women and residential schools involving the First Nations. The information presented can be used in the chapter 3 essay question.
