Congratulations on your decision to join Athlete Development. You have completed step one towards becoming a better athlete.
What is Athlete Development?
Athletic Development is for athletes who are looking to take their ability in sport to a new level and for athletes looking to continue on in the sport of their choice for many years to come. This program is based on the long term athlete development model (LTAD). Student athletes are provided with an opportunity to learn a wide variety of skills and attitudes that support physical, social, cultural and emotional education through sporting endeavorsThe goal of Athlete Development is to maximize the athletic potential and re-develop the way goals are achieved.
Please see the diagram on the back of this page to see the basic values and goals of athletic development.
What is expected of athletes?
Athletes are expected to enter this course with the right attitude, willing and open to new athletic experiences. Athlete Development will involve all aspects of athletes and therefore students need to be ready to participate physically, mentally and emotionally every day. Students will be expected to complete 2-3 complete workouts per week as well as attend seminars and complete assignments geared towards long term athlete development. Athletes will be expected to actively participate during class hours, attend monthly ASDC seminars during focus or after school hours, participate in after school workout sessions with a certified trainer.
How is the course structured?
Athlete Development at the 20/30 level consists of one full year 5 credit course. The course will be every other day for the length of the school year. This allows the athlete to follow the LTAD model and continue a training program (physical and psychological) for the entire year rather than only during season or one semester. The course will take place outside of the regular school day to allow for the most participation. Class will take
place from 7:00am-8:12am. Students taking this course in grade 11 are permitted to have one spare in their schedule because it is taking place outside of school hours. Also, any athlete who was unable to work Athlete Development into their schedule now has the opportunity to be a part of this program.
What is the cost?
All members of Athlete Development will have a full year membership to the Dan Gorman fitness Centre as well as access to 10 hours per week with a certified fitness instructor (above the St. Joe’s Gymnasium). Athletes will participate in workout programs created by the Alberta Sport Development Centre (ASDC) in combination with St. Joe’s physical education. Students will partake in seminars provided by the ASDC on topics such as training, nutrition and sport psychology. The cost to be a member in this program is $300 per year.
Thank you for choosing Athlete Development, we look forward to working in close connection with you next year!!
